About Us

The Ethical Co-op arose out of the need to access organic food more affordably and more conveniently. Besides organic fruit and vegetables, we offer a range of other organic and biodynamic items, from dairy to household products. You will notice that most of our products are better value when compared to other stores and supermarkets. Our range is growing all the time, and we welcome suggestions for new products.

How The Ethical Co-op Works

New members register with their email and contact details. They then login with their email address and password to access the order page. Every week when we open the site (usually late on Thursday night), we mail you reminding you to place your order. You then have until Monday 1.30pm to place your order. The co-op works on a prepayment model; we need to receive payment by Tuesday in order to pay suppliers. Members who have not paid for their previous week's order will not be able to order the following week. The co-op bank details are on the website; otherwise arrangements can be made for cash payments on delivery. Deliveries are made on a Thursday, anytime between 9:00 and 17:00, depending on where you live and various other factors.

A delivery confirmation is sent out after deliveries have been completed; members are only charged for what they receive. On occasion our suppliers cannot fulfill all orders and on other occasions we make mistakes - neither the plants nor the animals always perform to our schedules, and we humans remain just human.

We encourage the re-use, reduce, recycle approach and specifically the reduction of plastic. The Camphill 1L milk and yoghurts are supplied in glass bottles for which your account is credited if returned. We try our best to minimize on packaging; our cardboard boxes are min 80% recycled, and we appreciate receiving them back for re-use. We also collect kitchen scraps from members who do not have the space for their own compost heaps. No more feeling guilty about throwing those valuable scraps out with the true rubbish!

Our focus is on building awareness around organic food and promoting sustainable, organic farming practices. This means educating members as to the nutritional value and growing cycles of food, plus allowing members to know who the farmers are and where the food actually comes from. We want you to have an informed opinion when choosing what you want to eat and which practices you want to support. To learn more about any product on the site, simply click on it.
